Matisse Orange Silk Habotai Scarf
Description
DESIGNER'S NOTES
A vibrant Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf with a design after the work The Codomas (1947) by the French Fauvist and Modernist artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954).
Although appearing at first abstract, using Matisse's technique of gouaches découpées or cut-paper collage, the work is actually a depiction of a trapeze act, and comes from the book Jazz issued in 1947 as a collection of similar works.
Armed with an awareness of this interpretation, it is then possible to pick out the trapeze artist's swings, their safety net, and the two figures appearing to move toward each other in mid-air.
