DESIGNER'S NOTES

A green and blue Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf featuring an element from a colour woodblock print of the work Musashi koshigaya zai by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), most often referred to simply as Hiroshige.

Hiroshige was considered the last great master of the ukiyo-e tradition, an art form that flourished in Japan from the 17th to 19th centuries. The movement is recognisable for its stylised depictions of contemporary cultural scenes of sports, dancers and rural life; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; depictions of history and folk tales; and even erotica.

The image is No.14 in a series by the artist named 36 Views of Mount Fuji, which depict the peak in different seasons, weather and from a variety of different locations and distances. Hiroshige made two series with this title, this scene is from the latter 1858 series, both being similar in conception to one of the same name created by his predecessor Hokusai c.1830-32, which includes the famous Great Wave off Kanagawa.
