The development of pattern in Gustav Klimt's works is one of the defining features of the artistic style and evolved significantly over his career. Klimt's patterns often carried symbolic meanings, reflecting his interests in mythology, eroticism, and the cycle of life and death. As his career progressed, the patterns in his later works become more fragmented and experimental, reflecting the artist's continued exploration of abstraction and symbolism.
