Mackintosh Lady With Doves Silk Habotai Scarf
Description
DESIGNER'S NOTES An art nouveau Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf with a green and orange design over an ivory ground, by the Glasgow architect and artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928), from a poster for Scottish Music Review of 1896. The Scottish Musical Review was a short-lived monthly periodical launched in the mid-1890s to promote and discuss Scotland's musical culture, both classical and contemporary. It aimed to elevate the status of music in Scotland and provide critical coverage, commentary, and essays on musical developments at home and abroad. In 1896, Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed this striking poster for the publication while working for the Glasgow firm of Honeyman and Keppie. The poster, executed in pen and watercolour, reflects his emerging Symbolist and Art Nouveau style, featuring an elongated figure, stylised floral motifs, and two doves creating an ethereal, contemplative mood. Though the Scottish Musical Review folded soon after, Mackintosh's poster remains significant as an early and innovative example of his graphic design work and has been repurposed many times for book covers and exhibitions. COLOURS STYLING A Fox & Chave habotai silk scarf can be worn with the classic knot style or a pussycat bow.
