Burne Jones Laus Veneris Chiffon Scarf
Description
DESIGNER'S NOTES A romantic Fox & Chave chiffon silk scarf with elements from the pre-raphaelite work Laus Veneris or In Praise of Venus (1873-78) by the English painter and designer Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898). Burne-Jones was a central figure in the later phase of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, known for his dreamlike, medieval-inspired paintings that fused romanticism with symbolism. A close associate of William Morris and a contributor to the Arts and Crafts Movement, Burne-Jones sought to revive the spiritual and aesthetic ideals of early Renaissance art. His works are marked by elongated figures, intricate patterning, and an atmosphere of languid melancholy. Laus Veneris, depicts a medievalised Queen of Love, perhaps Venus enthroned in a richly adorned interior, surrounded by maidens, isolated in sensual melancholy as knights pass by outside, symbolising love's power and its spiritual cost. The work cemented Burne-Jones's status as a master of sensual, symbolic art, influencing the Symbolist movement and redefining the Pre-Raphaelite ideal through its emotional depth and decorative intensity.
