Description

DESIGNER'S NOTES A floral Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf with a variation on the design Single Stem created in the late 19th century by John Henry Dearle on behalf of the Morris Company. Despite the title, Dearle's 1890s design actually alternates several flowers along stalks, including tulips, carnations, and poppies. Each plant rises individually, clearly separated rather than woven into the dense interlace typical of William Morris's earlier work. This isolation of forms gives the pattern a heraldic dignity, closer to medieval manuscript borders than to naturalistic botany. Produced at Merton Abbey using block printing, the fabric required meticulous alignment for the repeating verticals, which made it expensive to manufacture. Dearle's choice of flowers carried symbolic resonance in Victorian culture, tulips associated with refinement, carnations with affection, and poppies with memory and mortality. COLOURS STYLING There are many ways to style a Fox & Chave chiffon silk scarf including the basic drape, belted drape and reverse drape. Our chiffon silk scarfs look really good worn in the bandit knot or faux infinity style too. More scarf styling ideas are available in this wonderful How to Tie a Scarf book.
