Alhambra Chiffon Scarf

DESIGNER'S NOTES A Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf with a design derived from moorish tiles known as  alicatado from the Alhambra Palace in Andalusia. The Alhambra Palace in Granada, begun in the 13th century under the Nasrid dynasty, represents the pinnacle of Andalusi artistic refinement. Its decorative tiling, is among the most sophisticated in the Islamic world, distinguished by intricate geometric patterns, interlacing stars, and calligraphic bands. Unlike the heavier, more austere tile traditions of North Africa, where bold monochrome motifs dominate, the Alhambra's tiles achieve a lyrical harmony of colour, proportion, and mathematical precision. This reflects both local innovation and the influence of earlier Umayyad Córdoba, where geometry and vegetal motifs were first combined with Iberian craftsmanship. The Nasrid artisans perfected the use of small, hand-cut pieces to form tessellated mosaics of dazzling complexity, embodying the Islamic quest for infinite repetition and divine unity. Yet the palette; soft blues, greens, whites, and ochres, draws from Iberian soil and light, giving the Alhambra's tiling a luminosity and subtlety absent from its Maghrebi counterparts.
