DESIGNER'S NOTES A floral Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf in ivory and red based upon a still life entitled Strauss of red, purple and white Peonies. by the Belgian painter and botanist Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) Redouté is celebrated as the preeminent botanical illustrator of his era. Known as the “ Raphael of flowers ,” he combined scientific accuracy with painterly elegance, producing watercolours of roses, lilies and other ornamentals that balanced meticulous detail with compositional grace. Trained in Liège and Paris, he worked for Queen Marie Antoinette and later for Empress Joséphine at Malmaison, documenting exotic plants collected from across Europe and the colonies. Redouté developed a delicate layering technique in gouache and watercolour, achieving luminosity and three-dimensional form. His published florilegia, such as Les Roses and Les Liliacées , influenced horticulture, botanical science and decorative arts, establishing a standard for botanical representation that remains unmatched in technical and aesthetic sophistication.
