Mackintosh Rhodedendron Silk Habotai Scarf
Description
DESIGNER'S NOTES A Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf with a repeat floral pattern after a watercolour study of a Rhododendron blossom made in 1915 by the Scottish Architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) Rhododendrons appear in the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh as part of his distinct fusion of natural form and stylised design. Influenced by both the Arts and Crafts movement and Japanese aesthetics, Mackintosh depicted rhododendrons with simplified lines, flattened perspective, and an emphasis on rhythmic curves. When it came to their application in design work, rather than replicating botanical detail, he abstracted their rounded clusters and bold leaves into symbolic elements, integrating them into watercolours, textiles, and furniture decoration. In his floral studies, the rhododendron often appears solitary or paired, set against spacious backgrounds that heighten its sculptural presence. These renderings reflect Mackintosh's ability to extract essence from nature, turning familiar plants into refined, poetic motifs within his broader architectural and design vocabulary. COLOURS STYLING A Fox & Chave habotai silk scarf can be worn with the classic knot style or a pussycat bow.
