DESIGNER'S NOTES A unique Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf with a design featuring an element from a French lithograph of a Suffragette march in London in the early 20th Century, offset with the movement's colours of purple, white, and green. The parade depicted was undertaken to celebrate the release from Holloway Prison of activists Edith New and Mary Leigh, who had served a two month sentence for smashing windows at the London residence of the Prime Minister at No.10 Downing Street.  Edith New was a dedicated British suffragette and member of the Women's Social and Political Union. She famously chained herself to railings at 10 Downing Street and was among the first to smash government windows as a form of protest. Mary Leigh was also a militant suffragette and and fellow member of the Women's Social and Political Union. She protested by throwing an axe at Prime Minister Asquith's carriage and setting fire to theatres as well as breaking windows, resulting in multiple imprisonments and hunger strikes, demonstrating her fierce commitment to women's suffrage.
