Van Os Fruit and Flowers Chiffon Scarf
Description
DESIGNER'S NOTES A floral Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf with a design derived from the oil painting Still Life with Fruit and Flowers painted in the mid 18th century by the Dutch painter Jan Van Os the Younger (1744-1808) Jan van Os was celebrated for his elaborate still life works, and Still Life with Fruit and Flowers shows his mastery of a genre that had waned since the Dutch Golden Age. Trained first as a seascape painter, van Os turned to flower pieces after marrying into a family of artists, adapting the earlier tradition of Jan Davidsz de Heem and Rachel Ruysch but heightening the sense of theatrical display. His compositions often overflow with roses, tulips, and peonies, mingled with grapes, peaches, and figs, all rendered with luminous clarity. Insects sometimes creep among the petals and fruit, signalling decay. Many of his works were engraved and widely circulated, influencing decorative arts across Europe.
