Palampore Chiffon Scarf
Description
DESIGNER'S NOTES A sublime Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf with a warm floral pattern in shades of pink and purple typical of the palampore style. Palampore is from the Persian palempur , and refers to a type of hand-painted and dyed cotton textile produced in India, particularly for export to Europe and Southeast Asia from the 17th to 19th centuries. These richly decorated fabrics typically feature large, central floral motifs, often a stylised tree of life, surrounded by intricate borders. Made using a combination of resist dyeing, mordant painting, and hand-drawn detailing, palampores were highly prized for their vibrant colours, especially deep reds and blues. Used as bed covers, wall hangings, or tablecloths, they were luxury items among European elites and influenced Western textile design. Palampores exemplify the fusion of Indian craftsmanship and global trade aesthetics during the colonial period.
