Morris Bourne Chiffon Scarf
Description
DESIGNER'S NOTES A classic Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf with an immediately recognisable arts and crafts floral design from the William Morris Company. Designed by John Henry Dearle in 1905, Bourne exemplifies the later evolution of the English Arts and Crafts textile tradition. The name is likely after a river like many similar designs, in this case the River Bourne in Surrey, echoing the movement's idealisation of nature. A dense pattern of scrolling acanthus leaves, stylised carnations, and symmetrical foliage, the design reflects Dearle's mature synthesis of William Morris's principles with Persian and Ottoman influences. With Bourne Dearle showcases his command of rhythm, repeat, and colouration, all hallmarks of Arts and Crafts design, which sought to restore beauty and craft integrity to domestic interiors. Although often overshadowed by Morris, Dearle was the firm's chief designer after Morris's death, maintaining the house style while subtly refining it.
