Kilburn Floral Chiffon Scarf
Description
DESIGNER'S NOTES A refined Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf with a floral design of realistic flowers and stems after a textile design created c.1788-92 by the Irish designer and illustrator William Kilburn (1745-1818). Kilburn was born and trained in Dublin he worked with natural history engraver James Ehret, before moving to London, where he became a leading designer for muslin and calico prints. His designs, often based on meticulous botanical studies, blended scientific accuracy with decorative elegance. He also contributed illustrations to Flora Londinensis by William Curtis, a landmark botanical publication. Later, Kilburn supplied designs to the printing firm of Peel & Co. and campaigned to protect textile designs from piracy, helping influence early copyright law. Many of his watercolour designs, lush, rhythmic, and detailed, are now held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, offering rare insight into late 18th-century textile aesthetics.
