Deco Stripes and Flowers Crepe De Chine Scarf
Description
DESIGNER'S NOTES A brightly coloured Fox & Chave crêpe de chine silk scarf in an art deco design style after furnishing fabric by Franklin & Franklin with floral elements and stripes in red, orange, yellow, pale green, blue and grey. Franklin & Franklin, began in 1851 as Auerbach, Franklin & Franklin, founded by E. Auerbach, H. W. Franklin and A. W. Franklin. By the early 20th century the business was run by the two Franklin partners related by marriage to Sir David Burnett, Lord Mayor of London. The firm specialised in furnishing textiles, such as carpets and drapery fabrics, advertising itself as merchants and general commission agents with a focus on block-printed cotton and cretonne fabrics. This particular design, held in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, was donated by the cousin of the designer who may have worked independently or for a design studio from whom Franklin & Franklin may have commissioned designs, a common practice at the time. Listed in a 1908 London directory as manufacturers of British machine & block printed fabrics, Franklin & Franklin was first based at 68 & 70 Pentonville Road, and by the 1910s at 69-71 Knightrider Street, City of London. It also maintained a Manchester branch. The firm remained active into the interwar period but records disappear after the 1930s, suggesting it was likely dissolved or was absorbed thereafter. COLOURS STYLING Wear your Fox & Chave crêpe de chine silk scarf in a variety of ways from the French Knot: Fold scarf in half, loop around neck, pull ends through loop, to the Infinity Knot: Loop scarf twice, tie ends in knot. More scarf styling ideas are available in this wonderful How to Tie a Scarf book.
