Canaletto Thames Tote Bag

DESIGNER'S NOTES A laminated tote style bag featuring the work London: The Thames on Lord Mayor's Day with St Paul's Cathedral (c.1746-47), by Giovanni Antonio Canal better known simply as Canaletto. Painted during a stay in England, the work captures the spectacle of the annual civic pageant, when the new Lord Mayor was paraded along the Thames in a richly decorated state barge. Canaletto depicts the river crowded with boats and flags, the lively bustle of spectators contrasting with the serene grandeur of St Paul's Cathedral rising above the city. The painting combines topographical accuracy with theatrical flourish, qualities that appealed to his aristocratic patrons. Unlike his Venetian scenes, this work frames London as both a working city and a stage of ceremonial splendour, elevating its river to the status of a cultural emblem.
