DESIGNER'S NOTES A courtesy face mask with a rainbow design. Rainbows form when sunlight interacts with water droplets in the atmosphere, combining refraction, reflection and dispersion. As light enters a droplet, it bends, separating into its component colours. Inside the droplet, the light reflects off the back surface, then exits, bending again and spreading into a spectrum. Each droplet contributes only one colour to a particular viewing angle, so a rainbow appears as a circular arc when countless droplets act together. The sequence of colours, red on the outer edge, violet inside, results from differing wavelengths bending at slightly different angles.
