Jane Loudon (1807-1858) was initially a science-fiction novelist and the writer of The Mummy! , (1827), before becoming a pioneering English writer and botanical illustrator, after marrying horticulturist John Claudius Loudon, and was best known for popularising horticulture among Victorian women. Her most influential works include The Ladies' Flower-Garden series and Gardening for Ladies (1840), which combined accessible language with beautifully hand-coloured illustrations.
