Monarch Of The Glen Tote Bag
Description
DESIGNER'S NOTES This laminated tote style bag features the work The Monarch of the Glen (1851) by the British artist Sir Edwin Lanseer (1802-1973). The painting became one of the most recognisable images of Victorian Britain. A canvas depicting a twelve-point stag standing alert against the misty Highland backdrop, its antlers raised in commanding profile. Landseer, celebrated for his animal paintings, invested the stag with a heroic, almost human dignity, embodying ideas of nobility, strength and untamed wilderness. Commissioned for the Palace of Westminster but later sold privately, the painting gained immense popularity through engravings and reproductions, adorning everything from whisky labels to biscuit tins. While admired as a national emblem of Scotland, it has also been criticised as a romantic invention, reflecting Victorian fantasies of the Highlands more than their lived reality.
